Calcium alginate, a polysaccharide extracted from kelp-like Phaeophyceae; formed by α-L-Mannuronic acid (M section) and β-D-Guluronic acid (G section) connected through 1,4-glucosidic bond. It’s shown in amorphous or fibrous powder with white to light yellow color, odorless, tasteless and non-toxic.

Properties:
1. Calcium alginate is a divalent alginate;
2. Insoluble in water and organic solvents, indissolvable in ethanol, but slowly soluble in alkaline solution or calcium salt solution.
Applications:

c) Used in formulation of food;
d) Medical gauze and medicine dressings.
